Indoor Activities to Keep Young People Busy!

As the temperatures drop and the days get shorter, it can be tempting to stay indoors and hibernate until Spring. However, staying active and engaged is essential for both children and adults during the winter months. With a little creativity, you can keep your family moving and having fun, even when it's too cold to go outside. Here are some winter activities to try with your kids that will get them up and moving indoors:

  1. Build an indoor obstacle course: Use pillows, couch cushions, and other household items to create an obstacle course that will challenge your child's balance and coordination. You can set the timer to make it a fun competition.

  2. Have a dance party: Put on your favorite tunes and dance it out! Dancing is a great way to get your heart rate up and release some energy, and it's also a fun way to have some laughs and create memories with your children.

  3. Set up a scavenger hunt: Create a list of items for your children to find around the house, such as a red sock or a book with a certain word in the title. This activity will get them moving while also engaging their minds.

  4. Try some yoga: Yoga is a low-impact way to get your body moving and reduce stress. Look for kid-friendly yoga videos on YouTube or download a yoga app that's designed for children. We love these Yoga videos:

  5. Play active games: Games like Twister, Simon Says, Red Light/Green Light, and Charades are all fun ways to get the whole family moving and using their bodies.

  6. Build a fort: Building a fort with blankets and pillows is a great way to encourage creativity while also getting your child up and moving.

  7. Do a workout video: There are many workout videos available online that are designed for children. Choose one that's appropriate for your child's age and fitness level, and do it together as a family. Check out these ones:

  8. Have a snowball fight (sort of): Whilst we may not often get snow outside in Adelaide, you can still have a snowball fight indoors! Use crumpled up paper or soft lightweight balls as "snowballs" and have a fun, active battle.

Staying active and engaged during the cooler months is important for both physical and mental health. By trying some of these indoor activities, you can keep your family moving and having fun, no matter what the weather is like outside.
