Fun in the Kitchen - 4 Easy Recipes to Get the Little Ones Cooking

Getting the kids involved in cooking is a brilliant way to spend quality time together while teaching them valuable life skills. Involving children in meal preparation can have significant benefits for their eating habits and attitudes towards food.

It encourages them to try new foods, understand the importance of a balanced diet, and develop a healthy relationship with food from a young age. Here are four simple and fun recipes that are perfect for budding young chefs to get stuck into.

1. Personalised Pizzas

Ingredients:

  • Pre-made pizza bases

  • Tomato sauce

  • Mozzarella cheese

  • Toppings of choice (sliced capsicum, mushrooms, olives, ham, pineapple – use this as an opportunity to clear out your friddge too!)

Instructions:

  • Preheat your oven following the pizza base package instructions.

  • Spread tomato sauce over each pizza base.

  • Let your young people sprinkle mozzarella cheese on top.

  • Encourage them to add their favourite toppings to create their personalised pizzas.

  • Bake in the oven until the cheese is bubbly and the edges are golden brown.

Cooking together tip: Have a yarn about the different toppings and what combinations might taste like. This is a fab opportunity to introduce new veggies in a fun way.

2. Fruit and Yoghurt Parfaits

Ingredients:

  • Greek yoghurt

  • Honey or maple syrup

  • Granola

  • A variety of fruits (berries, bananas, mangoes)

Instructions:

  • In small cups or glasses, layer Greek yoghurt and fruits.

  • Drizzle a little honey or maple syrup over each layer for sweetness.

  • Top with a layer of granola for crunch.

  • Repeat the layers until the cups are filled.

Cooking together tip: Chat about the colours and textures of different fruits and how they can make the parfait more appealing and nutritious.

3. Easy Cheesy Quesadillas

Ingredients:

  • Tortillas

  • Shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a mix)

  • Optional fillings: cooked chicken, beans, sliced veggies

Instructions:

  • Lay a tortilla flat on a plate.

  • Sprinkle cheese on one half of the tortilla, add optional fillings.

  • Fold the tortilla in half.

  • Cook on a skillet over medium heat until the tortilla is golden brown and the cheese has melted, flipping once.

  • Cut into wedges and serve.

Cooking together tip: Let the kids decide what fillings to add to their quesadillas, teaching them about different flavour combinations.

4. No-Bake Choc Peanut Butter Balls

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup peanut butter

  • 2 cups rolled oats

  • ½ cup honey

  • ½ cup mini choc chips

Instructions:

  • In a large bowl, mix together peanut butter, rolled oats, and honey until well combined.

  • Fold in the mini choc chips.

  • With clean hands, roll the mixture into small balls.

  • Place on a baking sheet and chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Cooking together tip: This is a perfect time to teach kids about measurements and how different ingredients work together. Plus, it's a fun, tactile experience!
