Audiology for Children

Audiology is an Allied Health specialty that helps people to identify, preserve, manage and improve their hearing, and their ability to process and understand sounds.

Audiology at Adelaide Paediatrics focuses on the early identification of hearing and ear health issues, along with the diagnosis and support for Auditory Processing Disorder (APD). Using the latest evidence-based technology children and infants can have a full diagnostic hearing and processing check in an age appropriate and fun way.

Audiology can help with:

  • The identification of ear health issues/glue ear
  • Comprehensive Diagnostic Audiological testing for children over the age of 6 months
  • Hearing screening for infants under 6 months
  • Full diagnostic testing and diagnosis for Auditory Processing Disorder
  • Fitting and support for personal listening devices

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)

APD is a hearing problem that affects about 3%–5% of school-aged children and it makes it hard for them to know what people are saying.

Although the signs and symptoms of APD vary from child to child below are the most frequently reported symptoms:

  • Difficulty understanding speech, especially in the presence of background noise
  • Difficulty following multi-step directions that are presented verbally, without visual cues
  • Easily distracted by sounds
  • Difficulty paying attention and listening
  • Difficulty remembering what has been said
  • Difficulty reading, spelling, and/or writing when compared to their peers
  • Misunderstanding of jokes, idioms, and figurative language
  • Being fatigued at the end of a school day

APD can be correctly identified from 7 years of age and is diagnosed over 2 appointments and is presented as ‘listening games’ to ensure your child is comfortable. If your child is diagnosed with APD Sharon will support and guide you to gain optimum outcomes for your child.

If you have concerned that your child may have APD, or would simply like to rule it out, please call our friendly team at Mile End on 7123 6147 and they will be able to assist you.

Listening Devices – Helping Children to Focus Better

Children with Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and language delays often have difficulty focusing and paying attention. Welcome to the Phonak Roger™ technology, proven to boost the ability of children to focus when in challenging noise.

Colourful auditory devices designed by Phonak Roger

Adelaide Paediatrics is able to loan a Phonak Roger System to your child in order to evaluate the benefits to their listening, concentration, attention, and overall well-being. Please contact us should you wish to discuss the trialling or purchase of a system.

Audiology is currently based at our Mile End Supergym and our Clinical Lead Audiologist, Sharon Price, is here to help and ensure your child has optimum hearing to aid their development.
