Encouraging Children to Embrace the Joy of Sports and Outdoor Play This Spring

Did you know that children and adolescents aged 5 to 17 years of age should aim to participate in up to 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous aerobic-based activity per day, and muscle-strengthening activities at least 3 times per week?! 

Spring is a season of renewal, where nature comes to life with vibrant colours and those lovely warmer days start to return. It's the perfect time to encourage the kids to step outside and embrace the world of sports and outdoor activities. While not every child naturally gravitates towards sports, with the right approach and some gentle words of encouragement, you can nurture their interest and foster a lifelong love for physical activities. Here are some helpful tips to get your child excited about sports and outdoor play this spring: 

1. Lead by Example: 

Children often look to their parents and caregivers as role models. Share your own enthusiasm for sports and outdoor activities by joining in with the kids. Take the opportunity to head to the local park or playground together, go for walks, bike rides, or enjoy a family game of chasey or a hit of tennis in the park.  

2. Discover Their Interests: 

Each child will develop their own preferences when it comes to sports and outdoor activities. Take the time to explore a wide variety of activities with your child to help them find out what they enjoy doing most. It could be anything from soccer to basketball, cycling, rollerblading, tennis or even hiking. Identifying their interests will make it far more likely for them to engage willingly. 

3. Make it Fun and Playful: 

Approach sports and outdoor play as a source of enjoyment rather than a chore or a serious competition. Organise fun games, treasure hunts, or obstacle courses that incorporate your child’s interests. Try to allow the emphasis to be on laughter, bonding, and exploration. As your child experiences the thrill of play and notices their skills improving, their level of interest will naturally build too. 
 

4. Involve Friends and Peers: 

Encourage your child to participate with their friends or peers in sports and outdoor activities. Playing with friends can enhance their motivation and enjoyment, as they learn new skills together and share the excitement of exploration. It also provides an opportunity for social interaction, promoting teamwork and friendships. 

5. Celebrate Small Achievements: 

Acknowledge your child's efforts and progress, no matter how small. Celebrate their achievements, whether it's riding a bike without training wheels, or completing a walk. Positive reinforcement will help to boost their confidence and encourage further participation. 

6. Provide Access to Sports Gear and Equipment: 

Make sure your child has access to appropriate sports gear and equipment. This could be a new soccer ball, a basketball hoop in the driveway, or a bicycle that suits their age and size. These things don’t need to break the bank either, as a ‘brand new’ secondhand bicycle or basketball hoop can bring just as many hours of fun as a shiny new one might do! Having the right tools can help children to feel even more eager to try out their new gear and build on their skills. 

7. Attend Local Sporting Events: 

Head along with the kids to watch local community sporting events or games. Whether it's a local football game, a youth soccer match, or a basketball game (the 36ers often have fabulous activities for families!), being part of the action can ignite their interest and passion for sports. 

Encouraging Outdoor Play If Sports Isn't Their Thing: 

If your child is hesitant about sports, don't worry; there are plenty of other exciting outdoor activities to explore: 

1. Nature Adventures: 

Explore local parks and nature trails. Teach your child about the wonders of nature, from identifying different plants and animals to enjoying a family picnic in the great outdoors.  

2. Creative Play: 

Encourage imaginative play outdoors. Provide art supplies, such as chalk or paints, for sidewalk or rock painting. Let their creativity flow as they design their outdoor masterpieces. 

3. Gardening: 

Introduce your child to gardening. Let them plant flowers or simple vegetables in pots or a small patch of the garden. Gardening teaches patience, responsibility, and the joy of watching something grow. 

4. Water Play: 

As the weather warms up, water play can be a refreshing and enjoyable outdoor activity. Set up a sprinkler, water balloons, or a small inflatable pool for hours of splashing fun. 

5. Adventure Scavenger Hunts: 

Organise scavenger hunts with age-appropriate challenges. Whether it's finding specific items in the yard or completing tasks, these activities will keep them engaged and excited.

6. Family Bike Rides or Walks: 

Take family bike rides or walks around the neighbourhood or local trails. It's an excellent way to spend quality time together while staying active.
